The Method isn't a preference.
It's the chemistry, written down.

Four findings, decades apart, point at the same design: work in ~90-minute cycles, put the demanding work early, cap it near four hours, and treat recovery as part of the work. Here is each one, plainly.

Kleitman's BRAC

Your brain already runs on a 90-minute clock.

In the 1950s, sleep scientist Nathaniel Kleitman discovered that the human brain cycles through periods of high alertness and rest roughly every 90 minutes, awake as well as asleep. He called it the Basic Rest-Activity Cycle, or BRAC.

You already know what 90 minutes of real focus feels like. The hour and a half before a deadline. The block after coffee where the work actually moved. That wasn't willpower. That was the cycle, and you happened to be riding it. The Method schedules the ride on purpose.

Adenosine

The battery chemistry is real, and it has a name.

From the moment you wake, a compound called adenosine accumulates in your brain. As it builds, neurons fire more sluggishly and sustained attention costs more. Caffeine works by temporarily blocking adenosine receptors. It doesn't empty the tank. It hides the gauge.

This is why the 3pm you isn't the 8am you with less time on the clock. It's a different piece of equipment with less in it. The Method's answer is not more coffee. It's putting the expensive work where the battery is charged, the cheap work where it isn't, and taking real recovery so the level comes partway back between draws.

Decision fatigue

Every choice you make spends the same battery.

Research on judges, physicians, and consumers keeps finding the same pattern: decision quality degrades across a session of repeated choices, and recovers after a break. Deciding what to work on is itself work. If you design your day from scratch every morning, you spend your best chemistry on scheduling instead of on the work.

That's why the Method is a fixed shape you run, not a plan you rebuild daily. Decide once, execute all day. The sprints are pre-sized, the categories are pre-assigned, and the only decision left each morning is the one that matters: what deserves Sprint 1.

Ericsson's ceiling

Four hours is the honest maximum, so the Method plans for it.

K. Anders Ericsson's research on expert performers (violinists, athletes, chess players) found they sustained roughly four hours of genuinely demanding practice a day. Beyond that, quality collapsed. Not four hours of being busy. Four hours of the hard, generative kind of work.

The Ultradian day is built to that ceiling on purpose: the generative sprints (1, 2, 3, and 5) total 75 + 75 + 45 + 45 = 240 minutes. Four hours exactly. The rest of the day is transactional work, recovery, and lunch. Everybody else is at their desk until seven, producing theater.

The research is clear.
